Anyone have experience with renting scooters in Cozumel? Many postings on Trip Advisor recommed against. I'm interested in know
1. What's the cost?
2. Will they rent to 18 year olds?
3. How safe is it? |

I would not rent any motor vehicle on Cozumel. Recent returnees have reported that the Federales (Highway Patrol) are stopping foreigners and demanding immediate payment of fines.
My advice is leave the driving to the natives. IMHO

I did it!!! I didn't know about it until after that it wasn't that safe. Lots of tourists were doing it.
Right before you get to the Ferry in Playa there was a guy pre-selling scooters or cars. He said He'd charge $30 where it would cost $38 on the island. But then we met people who said they paid $25 so whatever.
They have some crazy traffic laws on the island where you have to yield to traffic on roads going parrallel to the sea.
Go through San Miguel first and turn right when you hit the ocean. Just be careful that's all I can say. |

Only story I heard was that a lady rented a scooter in Cozumel, had some sort of accident and ended up spending alot of time at the police station and paying ALOT of money. This happened just a few months ago. She was a friend of a friend of mine. _________________ [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

As a foreigner you are always wrong no matter what happens. Period. Mexico requires that all financial connections to any incident be paid for in full BEFORE you are allowed to leave the country. In many cases the foreign driver is taken into custody until all payments have been made.
LEAVE THE DRIVING TO THE MEXICANS!!!

| I have to agree with Mustang on this one. For me from now on I am more than happy to pay a private transfer or hire a cab for a day. For $100.00 they will take you all over the island for the day and wait for you while you enjoy the beach on the East shore. Just like having a private driver. |

Ok, so I left a review of the resort,,, now I will tell you a little story about renting scooters in Cozumel.
short form:
4 scooters at $20 each for the day...scooters weren't in good shape. One of us crashed it due to a deep pothole.
The guy wanted $500, it was not even worth $100...A loud argument ensued, and was getting scary, we absolutely refused to pay.
Cops showed and took us to the police station. We saw a judge almost immediately and we settled for $180 which I think was fair considering we smashed it to pieces.
The cop was the Tourista Commisare - I think we were lucky he showed up.
I would NEVER rent scooters again there. |

heh heh,,, no "bud" , always leave that stuff in the hotel room..
But I'm curious, why never rent from the choppers place?
They looked like a good place, nice building, nice setup, new scooters. |
