| Is it best to buy a snorkel, mask and fins or hire them from somewhere? |

| I would definately buy your own. Of course, cleanliness (many different people use them and the cleaning process isn't the best) and a proper fit is very important. |

My local scuba shop, A-1 Scuba in Denver/Lakewood Colorado, sold me a package mask, fins and snorkel set for 85.00 and even the most seasoned snorkel vet was impressed, especially with the mask fit!
I am a germaphobe so my own equipment was a must. Anyway, why get out in the ocean just to find an equipment failure on rented gear? JMO |

Also for the men be sure to shave off that mustache or the goggoles won't seal. I learned that the hard way on my honeymoon to Playa Del Carmen back in '95. Also after my hard learned lesson of '95 I bought my own snorkel gear for my return trip in '97. I bought it at a sporting goods store In Tulsa, Ok. The rental equipment did not fit well and leaked all the time plus the flippers didn't fit well.
I've heard of men just using vasaline on the mustache to seal the mask, but it's better to just shave it. It will grow back, and you'll get some funny looks from those who've never seen you without one.
I shaved mine back this past July for snorkeling in Cabo San Lucas. |

Bring your own as all resort equipment is CRAP. Why risk a multi thousand dollar vacation on less than a few bucks spent on good equipment.

Another vote, BUY IT!!
Spend your big money on your mask, fins next, flotation next, just about any "j" tube will suffice for a snorkel.
Just 1/4 to 3/8 inch of clean skin between your nose and your moustache will allow your mask to seal. Think of Sir Alec Guinness's moustache or Clark Gable's, you'll look rakish. You will need to keep it smooth, I hit the lip first thing in the morning, then again at lunch time, I will hit it after supper if I ever have the opportunity to snorkel at night.
Whose face has been in this mask? Whose feet in these fins? Who else has used this snorkel? If nothing else, get your own snorkel!
DW and Mom have both purchased masks at Akumal Dive Shop, personal service, fit, advice, and cleaning; both are well satisfied with price, and Mom thinks it may be her best mask ever.
You'll pay almost as much for a weeks rental, and the free use of the resort gear is one hour per day per person. I can't stop at an hour. I'm a "snorkel 'til you wrinkle" type, an hour of snorkeling is just a start.
Enjoy.
