wife and I went on our first trip to mexico in january 2009. had a great week but weather was pretty cool. the beaches right in town were not as nice as we had hoped but we wonder if las caletas or yelapa`s beaches compare to the ones in playa?

I don't think you'll find better beaches anywhere than in the Riviera Maya.

I was in Puerta Vallarta last July myself. The water and beaches do not even compare to the ones in the Playa Del Carmen area.

The Pacific Mexican beaches / water do not even come close to the Caribbean. Keep in mind the beaches right around the town of Playa are much more crowded than the beaches at the larger resorts south of the town.
