Hello there, I have read some of you have seen Baracuda in the akumal snorkeling area. Is it safe to be around them? Has anyone seen sharks?

They don't bother humans unless humans bother them. If they see you, they will quickly swim away. They are more afraid of you than you of them.
I HAVE heard that you should not wear flashy jewelry while in the water as there have been some confirmed cases of them mistaking jewelry for fish and have attacked at the jewelry. _________________ [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

I was snorkeling in Akumal and happened upon a Cuda...I almost left a souvenir behind! After that I wasn't so comfotrable in the water, and decided it was time for a cerveza. We were already out there for a couple hours anyways...still enough to make you just about crap your pants. lol. I will still go back there though... _________________ Only bikers know why dogs stick their heads out of car windows! |

There are definitely in the waters of the RM. Some folks have been knownn to confuse Needle Fish with Barracudas. Google each before you go and you will easily know the difference. I have seen them at Akumal as well as several resorts.

There was a "resident" barricuda off the shore at the resort we stayed at in Cozumel. We saw "him" several times. He was very large, and hung out in the center of a school of fish. We figured that since he had a huge school of fish to choose from, he would bother us. It was so cool to see it!
I don't wear jewelry when I am in the water because I have also heard that they might mistake something shiny for a fish. Yikes! _________________ [url=http://www.TickerFactory.com/]

When we were snorkling at Akumal in front of the dive shop in June 2008 a BIG barracuda swam up right behind my 12 year old daughter. Thankfully she didn't see it or she never would have stayed in the water. We stayed in for another couple of hours and had a great time. _________________

| swim by the boats and look under - you can usually find Barry and one of his big sons lurking underneath (about 5-6 feet) |

Hope Barry hasn't been caught. Last week we saw a fisherman pull out a gigantic cuda. It wasn't catch and release either! _________________ Hilton - Puerto Rico 2003
